  6. He had a distinctive, hiccuping vocal style and was an early experimenter with recording techniques. Many of his hits with his band, the Crickets, such as That'll Be the Day 1957, Peggy Sue 1957, and Maybe Baby 1958, have become classics. He died in a plane crash.
